Best and Worst of 2012 and 2013

Posted by MF-Greth - January 12th, 2014

Man. Wow. Wow wow wow.

Did you know I started actively coming to this website in 2000? Or at least that's how far back I can remember... and I know that because I (somewhat unfortunately) remember the flash Spear Huntin' Vixens ... that's crazy, man. I was ten. Ten.

I had an account back in those days that I can't even fucking remember the name of... anyways, I made a new one in 2005 and have stuck to it ever since. I made this account when I was fourteen... and I'm turning twenty four soon. That means I've been on this account for (very nearly) a decade.

Wow man. That shit blows my mind.

Point, I never really grew into this account as anything more than a casual user until 2012, when I stepped up my game and started submitting my (in)famous game remixes. That was a good year. I learned quite a bit, and I still have quite a bit to learn as well.

Over these past two years I've done some stuff I'm pretty proud of... like that time my voice got used in a (pretty sweet) flash. Also, my remix of New Super Mario Bros. was used (very briefly) in a hilarious flash by the ever lovable RicePirate. Also, one of my Cave Story tracks did pretty freakin' good one time.

There's probably some other accomplishments I'm totally missing, but the point is, I made a little, itty bitty, mark on this website, and that feels pretty good. So going into the new year, I'd like to take a look back at 2012 and 2013, and see the tracks I really loved and really despised (besides ones I've already deleted... oops!)

2012

My Favorite Track:

Wow. I'm not sure how I pulled off something this good, to be honest. I don't want to toot my own horn too much, because I'm not that great, but this sort of blows away the original track (from the SNES gem, Metal Warriors)... which is an amazing track, in itself.

My Hated Track:

Ear shatteringly bad flute, lame string section, weak percussion, no variety... I really did a piss poor job with this, and it shows. I'm surprised I didn't delete this altogether like some of the other ones. It might be WORSE than that wretched Green Hill Zone I uploaded...

2013

My Favorite Track:

This was a really close toss-up with Star Tropics... I'm the first to admit this track is not perfect. The build up is kind of weak compared to the original, and some of the instrument samples aren't great. But there's something about this track that totally satisfies my insides. It's not better than the original, but I'm really proud of it for some reason... which is funny, because I was originally hesitant to even upload it. I let it sit for quite some time. But now I'm glad it's out there.

My Hated Track:

What's really dumb is how hard I worked on this one. Like, really hard. And it's TERRIBLE. It really boils down to a simple thing: I could NOT find a good synth for the main melody in any of my VSTs, and the one I chose in the end quite literally hurts my ears. Shame on me for even putting this one onto Newgrounds. What's worse is that simple mistake could have been avoided, and this shit could have at least been 'passable'. But it's not. There are other tracks that deserve this spot more, in a sense, but a simple mistake costed me hard. -enTRANCEd-, one of my originals, could've been here. Or the Gym Leader track from Pokemon, which suffered a similar fate (bad instrument choice for main melody). Bushlands from Cave Story is also bad. But that glass-shattering synth takes the cake. I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry.

Anyways, that's it from me. Look forward to more game remixes, and more original tracks, in 2014!
